Supposed to come from the Welsh word bicra, to fight, to bicker, and steth, a corruption of staff, used for tilting or skirmishing. Probably taken from the sign of an inn. Beker (Dutch), is a drinking-cup, Bekeren, to drink, to tipple, guzzle, with the termination steth, for sted, a place.
